I am a farmer and a doula. My husband and I are recently planted into the soil of East Texas. Together we seek, we learn, we dance, we sing, and we grow vegetables, and I attend births. This blog is the ongoing story of our farming and birthing journey.

Pedal Power

is bad ass.
Earth Day is coming. Here's a tribute to sustainability, simplicity, energy conservation, and exercise.

Water pump

Circular saw

Threshing rice

This next one is infinitely useful. The bike generates electricity to charge that fat battery. This is used in some rural school overseas somewhere where 32 children pedal for 15 minutes a day and give uninterrupted power for their classrooms. Sweet! It uses a stationary bike rather than a mobile one.

This next one really interests me cause it's one that I could use on a regular basis to conserve energy (or expend energy, which every way you look at it). I don't think you'd have to use one of those front loading ones, any old machine would work.

So here's the best set-up i've seen. It's (of course) Job Ebenezer's. It uses a second chain connected to the front of the bike, this way you are facing your work as you pedal, rather than having to crane your neck around to watch what's happening. You can hook this up to absolutley anything. And you can see it's on a small stand that you can fold up and then ride your bike back home whenever you're done. so cool.

I hope you've all been encouraged in efforts at sustainability.

Shalom

  1. Jessica, you're a stud. Thank you so so so so much for bringing those books to the farm for Will. I love them and have been so encouraged reading them. Hope all is well.
